Aldi commits to ambitious plastic reduction targets by 2025

With over 3,750 employees and 139 stores across the country, Aldi is the fastest growing retailer in Ireland, capturing a market share of 12.6% (Kantar Worldpanel, August, 2019). Aldi signed up to Repak’s Plastic Pledge in 2018, in addition to creating its own packaging commitments. These include reducing its overall packaging by 50% (relative to 2015 levels) by 2025 and ensuring that 50% of its packaging is made from recycled material by 2025.

To date, 153 tonnes of plastic has been removed from Aldi’s private label bottled water range through micron reduction and a further 17 tonnes of plastic packaging removed by moving to recyclable paper packaging. Aldi has also removed non-detectable black plastic trays from its fresh fish, fresh meat and fruit and vegetable lines.
