Lidl Ireland reduces single-use plastic and promotes instore recycling
Lidl operates over 162 stores in Ireland providing high quality products at market leading value. Its award winning sustainability strategy ‘A Better Tomorrow’ has resulted in several resource efficient plastic initiatives. In 2018, Lidl signed Repak’s Plastic Pledge to further demonstrate its commitment to the environment.
Some leading initiatives include discontinuing the sale of single-use plastic items such as plastic drinking straws, plastic cups and cutlery and banning microbeads in household and cosmetic products. Products are being sequentially redesigned such as a 30% plastic reduction in the Carrick Glen Irish Spring water bottles by redesigning the neck finish and compacting the cap, while plastic packaging on 2.5 million Fairtrade bananas has been eliminated by introducing a paper banding with natural adhesive. In store, customers can now dispose of unwanted excess packaging into appropriate bins and Lidl then recycles the material on their behalf.
