Musgrave reduces plastic packaging across 700 stores
Musgrave is Ireland’s leading food retail, wholesale and foodservice company with brands including SuperValu, Centra, Daybreak, Frank and Honest as well as Musgrave MarketPlace. The Musgrave sustainability strategy ‘Taking Care of our World’ is based on 4 key principles; eliminate, reduce, replace and educate.
Musgrave has implemented a range of initiatives to reduce plastic packaging across 700 stores nationwide, including removal of 2.7 million single use plastic bags through the introduction of compostable alternatives and the introduction of 100% compostable Frank and Honest coffee cups and lids. 40% of organic produce is now available in compostable packaging and 34% of fruit and vegetables are sold loose.
Together with SuperValu, Musgrave is trialing further loose items in store such as coffee, tea, spices, pulses and cheese. A major initiative has been the removal of black plastic and its replacement with recyclable plastic or compostable material alternatives with over 460 tonnes replaced to date.
